Plankton Nets and Fry Nets
For sampling the plankton in static or slow-flowing water. The nets may be towed behind a boat, or thrown out from a jetty or bank and drawn back through the water.
Rings Both the Plankton and Fry nets use the same stainless steel rings and have a similar shape but their fittings are quite different Plankton nets 250 and 300 mm plankton nets have 5mm stainless steel welded rings and 500 mm nets have 6mm stainless steel rings. Harness The harness is attached by Boheme clips on polypropylene cord. The central point on both is usually extremely strong sail ring but this can be substituted with a stainless steel swivel. The harness is 7 metres long and terminates in a loop The 3 point harness on 500mm rings is attached by shackles but we do not supply the tow rope as that is dependent upon clients own boat fittings. Cod End The standard cod end on 250 and 300mm rings is a screw on filter but this is replaceable by a tap fitting so either can be used in the field. Larger rings can not have tap fittings and they are occasionally produced with a blind cod end that has no fittings at all. A screw on 110mm filter can be fitted to 500mm nets or a shallow screw on cap. Vertical sampling of still water If you want to sample vertically we will fit a loop beneath the chosen end fitting for attachment of weights. Quality of Net The standard net is the required mesh with industrial nylon collars. A medium quality net uses a heavier rip stop nylon material and has a swivel on the harness. A heavy duty net is twin walled ripstop nylon plus a sacrificial outer plastic ring and swivel with shackle attachment. This is similar to the fish fry net. Fish Fry Net We have supplied several different constructions as fish fry nets but the most recent has been adaptations to the 500 plankton net. The mesh has been 500 micron and the net terminates in large 110mm screw on filters that permit easy removal of the fish. All nets have swivels fitted and stainless shackles. The material is double walled industrial nylon and a clear soft plastic tube is fitted around the ring to protect the neck and harness. These nets are often used in pumped situations where the top can abrade against concrete structures and the cod end swirls around in the flow. These substantial nets have been sold for freshwater and marine environments including power station outfalls, mill weirs and temporary barrages.
