Surber Samplers

 

These are becoming increasingly popular for quantitative sampling where the current is less than about 10cm/second.

The Frame

This is a modification of the original sampler described by Surber,

There are three standard sizes available with sampling area of either                                   

        Standard 0.1m2 (330 x 310) or Medium  0.06m2 (250 x 250)  or Small 0.04m2 (200 x 200)

 

Made from aluminium alloy 1" x 3/16" and riveted 

With nylon side-screens to reduce the loss of animals from around the mouth

         of the net. These fold flat for travelling.

Net fits on inner brass ring protected around the edge by aluminium frame.

Can be folded flat for storage or held in the

         correct position for sampling by means of  stainless steel bolts with wing-nuts.

The net bag

Is attached to the inner brass frame to reduce wear.

Is tapered with a closed end and nylon collar.

Length is approximately 0.6 m.

It can be supplied in either 1 mm knitted polyester mesh for general use

                or in either 500 ,250 or 100 micron nylon mesh for specialist surveys.

An open ended bag fitted with draw cord or large filter can be made to order.

REFINEMENTS FOR RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY WORK

 

Frame Extension - Our own design

 50mm deep extensions to the quadrat are

available to increase accuracy for research purposes.  These can be pushed into the substrate  reducing the possibility of any contamination by invertebrates from outside the quadrat.

       Extensions have to be ordered at the same time as the sampler frame.

Side screen Option - unique to us

Marine grade stainless steel side screen can be supplied instead of the nylon ones.  These are far more accurate but difficult to remove in the field for transport.  They have to be specified at the time of order.

Clear acrylic side screens can also be fitted and are now preferred to stainless ones by most users.

New Front Screen Adaptation - unique to us

The large frame can have an inner front screen added that  can be used to select the size of invertebrates by exclusion or reduce contamination by suspended debris in high organic load rivers

 

Central Handle. 

All standard surbers can be fitted with a central handle that is threaded to keep the surber still in higher flows and generally make use easier..

 

Converting Kick Nets to Surbers

  We also manufacture standard 150, 200 and 250 wide kick sample frames converted  into surbers with vertical handles.  Used in narrow channel situations or where access is limited.
