There have been recent deaths of otters trapped in
prawn nets on the River Yealm. We do not think otters could enter our
standard tube trap but if you have any doubt do not use them, use a refuge trap
instead. Do not under any circumstances copy the assembly pattern of our
tube traps on a larger scale or increase the opening as this would be lethal to
otters. If you have prawn nets then we might be able to manufacture a
guard if you send us dimensions. We no longer supply cage traps.
The following traps are designed for White-clawed native crayfish Austropotamobius
pallipes although they can be used for other species.
A Licence is usually required to work with and
capture these crayfish.
For a paper on survey method, their
appropriateness and efficacy try "A standardised survey and monitoring protocol
for the white-clawed crayfish
Austropotamobius
pallipes in the UK" A LIFE IN UK RIVERS contract by Stephanie
