GRAPNEL Health and Safety Warning

 

A grapnel if thrown incorrectly is a dangerous piece of equipment.  It is not recommended for use by school pupils.  Retrieving a grapnel can also be dangerous in some situations.  It is recommended that a risk analysis is carried out for all grapnel use.

 

Lightweight Hand Grapnel

For sampling aquatic plants. A lightweight three-pronged brass hook which can be thrown very easily.  Supplied with 15m of rope. The prongs are about 10cm long.

NB: Not suitable for use as an anchor because the prongs are designed to bend, if snagged, to allow the grapnel to be retrieved.

 

Heavyweight Hand Grapnel

This grapnel is deigned for retrieval of rubbish from water courses.  It is made from steel, welded and plated with a shackle attachment if a chain is required..  It is a similar style to the lightweight grapnel but much larger and heavy.  A dangerous object in the wrong hands.  Supplied with light line only, not as in photograph

Rake Grapnel

 

A double sided heavy duty grapnel for vertical sampling of macrophytes from a boat or secure landing point.  It can not be thrown.  It consists of a heavy double sided rake type head and detachable 1 metre pole.   Extension poles are then purchased to give the correct depth. A 15m rope harness is also supplied for use in very deep water.  The grapnel is made from steel and plated for long life.  There is provision for a second line attachment to facilitate retrieval from entrapping objects.  This grapnel must only be used by experienced staff following  H and S guidelines, a sample set for consideration are on the download part of this web site.
